Sheng Kee Bakery & Café – Berkeley

Rating: Role Player

We stopped into Sheng Kee for an afternoon treat and ran into an odd house rule right away: they don’t take credit cards for purchases under $5. My daughter originally wanted just the red bean mochi pastry, but I had to grab a second item to meet the minimum. Guess it worked out — we ended up with two pastries to share.

The kids loved the chocolate croissant — flaky, sweet, and an easy win. The red bean mochi pastry didn’t click with them, but I actually enjoyed it. Buttery, chewy, and not overly sweet — a pastry that feels balanced and a little more grown-up.

At $6.44 for the two, prices are reasonable, and the Telegraph Ave. location makes it convenient for a quick snack run. For families, the croissant is the safe play. For anyone open to something different, the mochi pastry is a worthy bite.
