Cooper’s Old Time Pit Bar-B-Que – Austin, TX

Rating: Role Player

Part of our Austin, Texas series — a look at the journey, the food, and the finds along the way.

After landing in Austin, I was craving BBQ — and Cooper’s in downtown fit the bill without having to trek outside the city. I went with the turkey and the cheddar jalapeño sausage, plus a side of coleslaw. Beans and BBQ sauce were available on the side, and everything gets spread out on the table with a simple paper mat — classic Texas style.

The food was solid. Not sure it’s the kind of BBQ that wins state competitions, but it definitely scratched the itch for smoky protein right after a flight. The sausage had good spice, the turkey was lean but flavorful, and the sides rounded things out.

I did splurge for dessert: the pecan cobbler. After loading up on protein and fat, I justified the sugar hit — and it was worth it. Rich, nutty, and indulgent, it ended the meal on a high note.

All in all, Cooper’s is a good option if you want real Texas BBQ without leaving downtown.
